Institutional Advancement and Grants Development
Institutional Advancement and Grants Development (IA) is the managing department for scholarships, grants, fundraising, and alumni affairs. The office is responsible for obtaining external funding and other resources to support the College's scholarship funds, academic and technical training programs, student support services, faculty and staff professional development, community outreach programs, and special projects. The department engages in research, planning, and soliciting funds from private and public entities including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.
The practice of raising money for the College dates to the early 1900s when St. Philip's College (SPC) was a modest industrial school for African-American girls. Dr. Artemisia Bowden, who served the institution for 52 years first as its primary teacher and finally as the president, led the College's first fundraising efforts by personally soliciting donations from the community.
In keeping with tradition, President Adena Williams Loston develops and leads fundraising initiatives for the College. She serves as the liaison between the Alamo College District Development Office on all St. Philip’s College-specific fundraising activities.
