What is the Physics program?

This program helps you understand, predict, and harness the basic forces of our universe through the study of motion, energy, matter, heat, sound, light and the structure of atoms.

What will I learn?

You’ll study the laws of motion, force, energy and momentum. You’ll learn fundamental concepts and real-world applications of physics, using mathematical relationships and theories to describe natural phenomena. You’ll gain an understanding of mechanics, heat and sound, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, the behavior of light, and concepts of modern physics, such as relativity, atomic physics and nuclear physics. You’ll study subjects including geophysics, biophysics, astronomy, molecular physics, elementary particle physics, and more. You’ll also get hands-on experience in SAC’s state-of-the-art laboratory and using industry-standard software.

What can I do with this course of study?

The Physics program gives you a broad foundation in the physical sciences, preparing you to transfer to a four-year institution. Physics is a pathway to many fields of study and careers, including medical technologies, engineering disciplines, astronomy, weather analysis, education, research and more.

What's special about the program?

SAC’s Physics program plays an integral role in supporting and encouraging students to pursue STEM careers. Our faculty strives to provide you with curricula informed and shaped by physics education research as well as experience with the most current classroom learning technologies available. You’ll also have access to many resources to help you succeed in your program, including the STEM Academic Center, a study/resource center for students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math, located in the Chance Academic Center (CAC) 204 and the Math Success Center in McCreless Hall (you can check out a calculator here for free with student ID).
