What is the Geography program?Geography is both a physical and social science that studies the diverse places, physical processes and natural systems of the Earth’s surface and the relationships between people and their environments. What will I learn?You’ll gain a foundation in the fields of human and physical geography and the interdependent relationships between both as you analyze information, look at maps, census data and other sources. You’ll develop the ability to understand and assess real-world issues through the use of geospatial technology, geographic concepts and principles. You’ll learn how geospatial data is used in many activities in daily life while developing a deeper understanding of the world around you. |
What can I do with this course of study?An associate degree in geography serves as the equivalent of your first two years of a bachelor’s degree, preparing you to transfer to a university to continue your studies. From there, you can specialize in a branch of the field, such as economic, urban, political, physical, or medical geology, or geographic information systems. With a bachelor’s or graduate degree in geography, you can pursue careers such as environmental consultant, urban planner, conservation officer, cartographer, geographic information systems (GIS) analyst, landscape architect or educator. What's special about the program at SAC?Geography has been a degree program at San Antonio College for more than 50 years. Now more than ever, geographic literacy is necessary for us to understand global events. SAC Geography courses meet the requirements for degree plans at all Texas public universities and many others nationwide. The broad scope of this field means that geography classes also meet college and university requirements in multiple disciplines, including life and physical sciences, creative and communication arts, public service, business, social and behavioral sciences and language, philosophy and culture. |
